A dybbuk is a wandering soul in Jewish mythology that attaches itself to a living human being. Reasons given include that the dybbuk committed sins in its lifetime (such as committing suicide) and is trying to escape punishment in the afterlife, or that the dybbuk is using its victim's body to complete unfinished business, or seek revenge. The unfortunate victim will be psychologically tormented by the dybbuk, and the myth was possibly invented to explain mental illness.
